WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University and People’s Brewing Company have teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind beer that will benefit agricultural research at the university.

The boilermaker branded ale, “Boiler Gold,” will initially be sold at Ross-Ade Stadium and the 1869 Tap Room in the Purdue Memorial Union, with plans to have it on shelves in Indiana and the Chicago area in time for the holidays.

People’s Brewing Company owner Chris Johnson describes “Boiler Gold” as a session beer, meaning it’s not heavily hopped like an IPA or stout and should appeal to a wide range of tastes.

“For me, this is the intersection of two things I’m passionate about -  brewing and Boilermakers. Boiler Gold-American Golden Ale – from the hops to our company to the packaging – speaks to the connection I have to our state and Purdue,” said  People’s Brewing Co. owner Chris Johnson.

“Boiler Gold ale is an expression of Boilermaker pride,” said Purdue President Mitch Daniels.

University proceeds from the sales will go to support agricultural research – including areas that support the state’s growing craft beer industry.

Brian Farkas, head of the Department of Food Science at Purdue University, said they have plans to begin offering a minor in fermentation sciences in the fall of 2018 and hope to allow students to major in the discipline in the coming years.

“Our engagement with breweries and hops producers gives us the input to play a role in expanding a growing industry and creating a curriculum that is relevant to students and potential employers,” said Farakas.
