WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- P.J. Thompson scored 10 of his 12 points in the final seven minutes Thursday night, helping No. 22 Purdue pull away from Ohio State 75-64.

A.J. Hammons added 16 points as the Boilermakers (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten) won their third straight.

Ohio State (12-8, 4-3) was led by Jae'Sean Tate, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Purdue trailed 36-33 at halftime and stayed within one possession most of the second half until Ryan Cline's 3 with 9:02 to go made it 53-52.

Thompson made sure the Boilermakers never trailed again.

He scored five in a row to make it 60-54.

After Ohio State's Trevor Thompson made only 1 of 2 free throws with 2:51 left, when he could have tied the score, Thompson scored five more to extend the lead to 66-61.

Purdue sealed it by making six free throws in the final minute.

Thompson's late flurry was a surprise since he had only reached double figures once in Purdue's previous 13 games.

The rest of Purdue's combination was no surprise.

Vince Edwards had 12 points and seven rebounds, Caleb Swanigan had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Isaac Haas scored 10 points. And after allowing the Buckeyes to go 6 of 9 on 3s in the first half, Ohio State missed all five of its 3s in the second half. Kam Williams had 14 points, all in the first half, for the Buckeyes, who have lost three of four.

For Purdue, it was all about getting back to the basics.

Swanigan scored Purdue's first five points in the second half to tie the score at 38 and after that neither team could get control -- until Thompson made two free throws with 7:16 left to extend the lead to 57-54. He followed that with a 3 and broke the game open with another 3 with 1:03 left that made it 69-61.

Ohio State never got closer than two possessions the rest of the game.

ON THE REBOUND

The Boilermakers are on a record-breaking rebounding pace and didn't hurt themselves by outrebounding the Buckeyes 38-30 on Thursday. They came into the game with a plus-12.6 rebounding margin, the best in the nation. Purdue's single-season record is plus-7.6.
