INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts have told wide receiver Andre Johnson they intend to release him, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Johnson was signed in Free Agency prior to the 2015 season after being released by the Houston Texans, the only other team he had played for. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound University of Miami grad was slated to replace fellow Hurricane Reggie Wayne, but failed to live up to his Pro Bowl billing of the past.

The 34-year-old veteran was widely considered a disappointment in the Colts up-and-down offense in their 8-8 2015 season. Johnson caught 41 balls for 503 yards as the tertiary target for the carousel of Colts quarterbacks. behind TY Hilton and Donte Moncrief.

His biggest game came in the first game against his former team, the Texans in Week 5, when he hauled in two touchdowns on 6 catches for 77 yards, but he averaged just 2.5 catches per game, being held without a reception in three of the 16 games he played in as a Colt.

He's had seven 1,000 yard seasons, with more than 100 receptions in five of his 12 seasons in the NFL.

According to, Johnson was reportedly set to make $5 million in base salary in the 2016 season, but only $2.5 million was guaranteed that the Colts will have to part ways with.
