INDIANAPOLIS -- Ben Davis' football team was honored at the Indiana House of Representatives on Monday, but it was a speech by their former head coach that will be the memorable point of the day.
The team won the 6A Championship three months ago with a 63-14 win over Penn.
Former Head Coach Mike Kirschner is known for his speeches, and he didn't pass up the chance to deliver one at the statehouse when his players were being honored as the state champions.
Both Ben Davis and Warren Central had a tough year on and off the field.
Warren Central's Dijon Anderson was killed in a west side shooting and Ben Davis' Rondell Allen was injured in a separate shooting.
With those shootings and the others in the Indianapolis community on his mind, Mike Kirschner took the opportunity to speak out as his team was being honored.
Watch his speech in the video player above.
Kirschner was the head coach at Ben Davis High School for 11 seasons before stepping down last month.
***In a previous version of this story we erroneously published that Rondell Allen was killed in a separate shooting. Allen was only injured in that shooting. We regret our error.***
