INDIANAPOLIS — As more than 300,000 people pack the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, security will be ramped up.
If you're driving to the track for the Indy 500, make sure to get there early because with the security it might take some time as bomb-sniffing dogs will be checking out vehicles.
"You can't ever predict how the crowd is going to show up, and sometimes they show up all at once, and it takes a long time to get them through there," Wendell Hart, a K-9 handler, said.
Thirty K-9s, the most they've ever used from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, are putting their noses up to any vehicle going into IMS.
Officials say there will be people on site in orange vests instructing drivers on what to do. Hart said this is what you can expect:
"We'll do a big group all at once and move them in, move the next set of vehicles in place. We'll have them shut their vehicles off, so the dogs don't get burned, or somebody forgets to put it in park, nobody will get run over. So safety is the primary thing we want them to be concerned about."
Although it might take a few extra minutes of your time, it's all for you, the race fans.
