INDIANAPOLIS -- Organizers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway showed off their newest gadget Tuesday meant to help keep fans safe during this year’s Indy 500.
The robot - named “Ross-E” – was introduced by the winner of the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, Alexander Rossi.
Ross-E features a camera to help keep an eye on things and is programed to run on its own. It can identify things in its path and adapts its movement to go around them as necessary.
Officials at IMS say Ross-E is fun, but also serious.
"The track in 1909 was to demonstrate new technology," said IMS President Doug Boles. "And it's kind of fun that almost 110 years later, we're doing the same with our friends at Sharp."
The 102nd Running of the Indy 500 is set for Sunday, May 27. You can watch it that night only on RTV6.
