INDIANAPOLIS -- IndyCar rookie driver Spencer Pigot crashed during practice for the Indianapolis 500 Wednesday.

Pigot hit the wall coming out of Turn 1, spinning the car a few times before coming to a rest.

Pigot got out of the car on his own power and was checked and released at the IMS Care Center.

He had just turned in a lap of more than 219 miles per hour.

Pigot catapulted to IndyCar after he won the Indy Lights series championship and rookie of the year in 2015.

This is the first crash during Indy 500 practice leading up to the 100th Running of the Race.
