INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts were the talk of the town in 2007 after winning the Super Bowl in February with a 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears.

Peyton Manning was named the MVP of the game and later revealed that then two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves gave the team a pep talk the night before the game.

Also in 2007, ground was broken on what is now the cultural trail that connects Indianapolis's six cultural districts. The brick pathway throughout the city is popular with walkers, bikers and runners.

Maybe the only bricks that are more famous in this town are the ones that make up the yard of bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A familiar voice was missing from the 2007 Indianapolis 500. For the first time in years, Jim Nabors was not there to sing "Back Home Again in Indiana". He was too ill to travel. So the fans filled in, led by the Purdue University Band.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning waved the green flag for the start of what turned out to be a long race marred by crashes and  eventual weather delays.

Strategy played a key role, and after the first three-hour weather delay with Tony Kanaan still chasing his first Indy 500 victory sitting in the lead, the racing was intense as more rain was expected.

On lap 162, Dario Franchitti had the lead when Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti crashed, bringing out the yellow.

We never saw the green flag again as during the caution, the sky opened up once again.

In the pouring rain, Franchitti cautiously took the checkered flag and his first 500 win.

NOTABLE: The race was broadcast in high-definition for the first time, rain delay and all. Less obvious to fans was the change in fuel from methanol to ethanol, and one team was fined for using a mixture of methanol on pole day. It was also the final race with Panoz chassis — Dallara would provide all of the chassis in the field the following year.
