Four-time Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams was knocked out of the 2016 Olympics on Wednsday when she lost in straight sets to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina. 

Svitolina upset the No. 1 seed from America 6-4, 6-3 at Center Court of the Olympic Games. 

Williams won gold at the London Games in 2012 for both singles and doubles. She also won gold in doubles at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics. 

 

Williams double faulted seven times in the second set, where here serve was broken twice Svitolina.Williams also committed a total of 37 unforced errors, compared to 17 for Svitolina. 

Svitolina is ranked 20th in the world. Svitolina was previously 0-4 against Williams. 

Williams was also knocked out of doubles competition earlier this week, along with her sister Venus. 

Williams is not slated to participate in next week's Western and Southern Open. The early exit at Rio could allow for the top female tennis player in the world to participate at next week's event.
