INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers shooting guard Monta Ellis will be suspended for the first five games of the next NBA season for violating the league's anti-drug policies.

The suspension was announced Friday via the Pacers' Twitter account.

The Pacers did not specify the violation, but Kevin Pritchard, president of basketball operations, said "Monta's suspension is a very serious matter to our franchise and will be dealt with accordingly."

The shooting guard averaged 8.5 points per game last season on 27 minutes per game and 44 percent shooting.

He's been in the league for 11 years. This was his second year with the Pacers.
