Severe storms as February ends, March begins

Posted

Severe thunderstorms are moving across the eastern half of the United States as we're transitioning from February to March. For this part of the country, it appears March will be in like a lion.

Damaging winds are most likely with the incoming weather system, but tornadoes and large hail are also a good possibility.

Tuesday's severe weather threat is centered across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, and it looks like the timing of the storm will be in the late afternoon and evening.

In addition to the severe storms, heavy downpours could lead to some localized flooding in northern Kentucky, southern Indiana and southwest Ohio.

This same storm system will keep moving east on Wednesday, and the severe weather chances are greatest along a line stretching from West Virginia down to northern Alabama.

This means another potential for tornadoes and large hail in addition to damaging winds and heavy rain.

The severe weather chances in the final weeks of February have arrived a little earlier than normal this year thanks to the recent surge of spring-like warmth across the Plains, Midwest, South and the East.

If long-term forecast models are any indication, the warm air will persist through the at least the first week of March before only slightly backing off in the East in the second week of the month.
