INDIANAPOLIS -- With Christmas less than two weeks away, many of you might be dreaming of a white Christmas.
Statistically speaking, our chances aren’t great in Indianapolis. They are a little better as you work your way into northern Indiana and -- as you would expect -- a little worse as you head south.
Typically a white Christmas is defined as have 1 inch or more of snow on the ground on Christmas Day. In Indianapolis, the chance of that is about 27 percent, in South Bend it is a 50 percent chance and in Evansville, only 11 percent.
For those of you who remember back to 2004, we had 9 inches of snow on the ground for Christmas. That year still holds the record for snow on the ground on December 25. If you are looking for the last time we had any snow falling on Christmas Day, you don’t have to go back as far.
In 2010 just under a half an inch fell while the record snowfall for Christmas is way back in 1909 when we saw 5.9 inches.
So, will we have a white Christmas this year? Looking at models it does look like we will get a pretty good push of cold air once again the weekend before Christmas.
As this cold air comes in it will have the possibility of producing some snow that could stick around into Christmas Day. However, I don’t see any “big” snowstorms impacting us before Dec. 25.
