June outlook: More heat for Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS -- Summer officially arrives this month, but with the heat of May it's really felt like summer started several weeks ago.

One more reason our record setting May felt so hot was the contrast to a chilly April.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis shared a tweet saying, "The average temperature in Indianapolis was 47.1° in April and 72.6° in May.  That's a 25.5° difference!"

While June starts off with a break in the heat and humidity, the trend is for another toasty month.  The Climate Prediction Center outlook calls for above average temperatures all across central Indiana this month. With the arrival of summer, our average high temperature warms from the upper 70s to the mid-80s.

Do you still need rain? Much of central Indiana does.

Not only was May hot, it was dry for many of us.  Widespread drought remains off to our west, but "abnormally dry" conditions are developing over SW areas. June has the potential to be a damp month.  Our average rainfall reaches over 4".  However, the outlook calls for below average rainfall over the northern third of the state.  This may signal drier than average conditions for the rest of us.
