INDIANAPOLIS -- March is here and that means we're getting closer to spring! It's time to look ahead at what types of weather might be coming our way this month.
First, a quick look back at February.
The second month of the year started off pretty cold, but that all changed around Valentine's Day.
Warmer than average temperatures took over - according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, we tied for the 17th warmest February on record.
With the warmth came lots of rain: 4.65" of rainfall was enough to tie for the 13th wettest February in Indianapolis weather history.
It appears March may turn into a soggy month too.
Above average precipitation across all of Indiana, that's the official outlook from the Climate Prediction Center. Keep in mind we generally average about three and a half inches of rain.
We can still get snow in March too, although it gets harder to come by as time goes on.
What about temperatures?
A cold snap is on the way and temperatures will struggle to reach 40 degrees early in the month. That said, the overall outlook is for above average temperatures to win out. Our average high climbs close to 60 degrees by the end of the month.
March is also the time of year our severe weather season begins to ramp up, so now is a good time to start refreshing yourself with your severe weather safety plan.
