INDIANAPOLIS -- Have you noticed a red dot near the moon lately? It's not a bright star - It's actually a planet!
The little red dot you see is Mars shining brightly in the night sky and the planet is the closest it's been to Earth since 2003. You can check out the show by looking into the southeastern sky.
If you're checking out the full moon Friday night, just look below it for the bright red spot - that's Mars!
For the curious, that puts the "martian planet" only 35.8 million miles away.
The Department of Natural Resources is even hosting viewing parties for the event. You can take part in hikes Friday night at Patoka Lake, Turkey Run & Spring Mill State Parks and Raccoon State Rec Area.
