Midwest winter outlook paints an active picture

INDIANAPOLIS -- November is turning into a soggy month for us with nearly 3 inches of rain so far. The question is will you need the umbrella to battle more rain this winter or will the snow shovel get a workout?

The Climate Prediction Center’s outlook is in with this winter’s trend.

It continues to look like we’re in store for an active season. The latest outlook calls for above average precipitation through the winter months.

That doesn't necessarily mean lots of snow though. While we average 26 inches of snow, the temperature is the biggest piece of the puzzle. There’s no strong signal for either above or below average temperatures.

That means we’ll have to rely more on temperature trends only a couple of weeks out, and that will determine whether we get in on snow, chilly rain or even thunderstorms.

Mike Ryan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, says, "I think it’s not going to be uncommon to see rain and maybe even strong thunderstorms with a couple of events over the winter.  The potential is also going to be there for snow, maybe ice, unfortunately."

Ryan says he thinks this winter's snowfall will be around two feet of snow - which is average for central Indiana.
