Central Indiana nearing drought conditions

INDIANAPOLIS -- Is your lawn going from lush and green to brown and dry?  You aren't alone as recent rains have been reserved for a lucky few.

Our spring season started off with flooding rains.  By the end of April, we had more than a three-and-a-half-inch surplus in the rain gauge. Our recent dry spell has erased all of that. We're now below average for the year.

Each week, on Thursday, the drought monitor is released. Last week, we started to notice the impact of the lack of rain. Abnormally dry conditions developed over southwestern areas.  That's the first category before drought. This week's update shows the abnormally dry conditions have spread into much of central Indiana, including Indianapolis.

While we do have some rain chances on the way, the amount of rain could be lacking. Many areas are expected to see one inch or less between now and Tuesday. Of course, that can quickly change if you are lucky enough to get under a thunderstorm. For now, it may be a good idea to keep the sprinkler handy.
