Thousands without power as bitter cold settles across central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Thousands of Hoosiers started Wednesday without power as bitterly cold temperatures settled across the state Wednesday evening.

The temperatures dropped below zero early in the morning and wind chill values hit -20 before the sun came up.

Statewide, more than 15,000 customers were without power as of 6 a.m. and those numbers are expected to fluctuate throughout the day.

Duke Energy reports more than 2,000 customers without power.

Tripmont REMC reports they have restored the more than 1,200 customers who were without power.

The outages came during the coldest temperatures in years over much of the Midwest.

The temperature fell to -11 degrees shortly after sunrise in Indianapolis.

The U.S. Postal Service suspended mail delivery on Wednesday in parts or all of several Midwest states, including Indiana.
