INDIANAPOLIS -- A gas station clerk was shot during a robbery on the north side Sunday night.

Police arrived to the Phillips 66 gas station near 5100 North Michigan Road around 8:40 p.m. on a report of a person shot. They found a unidentified man shot in the chest.

He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Detectives say the man was shot by two suspects inside the gas station.

No further details were available from investigators, but we spoke with family members of the victim.

The victim's nephew - whom we are keeping unnamed - says one of the suspects shot his uncle in the chest after a struggle.

"I'm scared, so I'm in the back, you know," he said. "(And then) they shoot my uncle in the chest."

Police say the clerk was stopping the robbers' progress into the store, and that's when the altercation occurred, with the victim's nephew hiding in a back room, fearing for his life.

"I am stressed and I am scared here," the man said.
