TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. -- A man was found dead along the side of I-65 just south of Lafayette on Friday.

Indiana State Police said someone made the report after seeing the man lying in the median near the 165 mile marker between the north and southbound lanes around 7:30 a.m.

Investigators initially said there was not abandoned cars nearby and the man's body was found miles from the nearest exit, but police later found his vehicle miles away from the body.

He was later identified as 55-year-old Robert Lee Reagan of Lebanon, IN.

As a result of preliminary evidence, police believe Reagan's 2006 Toyota Prius had run out of gas and as he began to walk toward the exit, he was struck by a vehicle. Officers believe that vehicle continued to drive down I-65.

Indiana State Police are investigating the death.
