INDIANAPOLIS -- One man was arrested after a fight and a shooting Thursday morning at a gas station on Indianapolis' south side.
The incident happened at a BP gas station near the intersection of Shelby and Raymond streets around 1 a.m.
A man was at a pump getting gas when another approached with a gun. The 32-year-old victim fought with the 24-year-old suspect, and the gun went off, police said. An officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was at a nearby stop light when she saw the fight.
She didn't know the circumstances behind the fight, so she took both men into custody until the situation was sorted out. Police quickly learned what happened based on surveillance footage.
The victim was taken to Eskenazi Health for a gunshot wound. He is expected to be OK. The suspect was also taken to Eskenazi for abrasions after the victim slammed him to the ground.
An IMPD spokesperson said they don't encourage people to do what the victim did, but in this instance it worked out.
Police say the suspect tried a similar robbery about a mile away. He will be charged in that robbery as well.
