INDIANAPOLIS -- Nineteen people were evacuated from a retirement community Monday morning after a fire broke out in the building.
Fire crews arrived at the Crestwood Village Retirement Community at 314 Welcome Way Blvd around 2:15 a.m. to fine a second-story apartment on fire.
Of the 19 people evacuated, three were evaluated by medics on the scene, and one was taken to the hospital.
An 86-year-old woman had to be rescued from her balcony by firefighters with a ladder.
One of the units was completely destroyed by the fire, which was started by a discarded cigarette.
