CARMEL, Ind. -- One person died, and one injured in a one-vehicle crash in Carmel Monday morning.

The crash happened around 11:20 a.m. when a car hit a tree near the intersection of 96th Street and Haverstick Road.

Police believe a black 2009 Acura driven by Robert Ingles, 68, from Indianapolis was traveling eastbound on 96th Street near Wild Cherry Lane when he drove off the road and struck a speed limit sign.

Ingles then overcorrected, drove off the north side of the road and hit some trees.

Ingles and his passenger Thomas Billingsly, 71, from Indianapolis were taken to St. Vincent Hospital, according to police.

Billingsly was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Ingles is listed in critical condition.

Carmel police are continuing to investigate the crash.
