INDIANAPOLIS – A 3-year-old with autism is in critical condition after he was found in a retention pond on the city’s north side Thursday night.

The child was found in a retention pond at Brandywine Apartments near 86th Street and Ditch Road around 11 p.m.

Police were called when nobody could find the boy after he wandered away from the area.

The child's parents only speak French, but luckily, the responding officer spoke French. The officer and the child's father jumped into the water to save the boy.

A spokesperson with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the officer's ability to speak French was crucial in reacting as soon as they did.

The boy is in Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.

Police do not believe this to be a criminal incident, just a tragic accident.
