INDIANAPOLIS -- A few weeks after issuing an emergency call for blood donations, the American Red Cross is still facing a shortage.
As an incentive to give blood, people who donate from July 26-Aug. 31 will be emailed a $5 Target gift card.
Donors with all types of blood are urgently needed. Through May and June, there were 61,000 fewer donations than needed.
After the emergency call earlier in the month, the Red Cross saw a 30 percent increase in blood donation appointments, but more is still needed.
“The blood supply is like a cell phone battery, it constantly needs recharging,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the Red Cross. “We sincerely appreciate those who have responded to the call to help save lives and encourage those who haven’t to consider rolling up a sleeve and give the gift of life. It only takes about an hour but can mean a lifetime for patients.”
The Indiana Blood Center experienced a similar shortage in early July.
