BLACKFORD COUNTY — Two kids were killed Friday night after a head-on crash involving a pick-up truck and semi-truck in Blackford County, according to the sheriff's office.

A five-year-old and six-year-old were killed after the driver of the pick-up truck they were in crashed into a semi-truck for an unknown reason, Blackford County Sheriff Jeff Sones said in a press release. The kids, whose names have not been released, were children of the pick-up truck's driver, Robert Cook, 37, of Montpelier.

The crash was reported around 8:30 p.m. near State Road 18 and State Road 3, which is north of Hartford City and west of Montpelier, Sones said.

Cook was taken to IU Health Blackford Hospital and was later flown by a medical helicopter to a hospital in Ft. Wayne, Sones said. The driver of the semi-truck, a 43-year-old of Cogan Station, Pennsylvania, was not injured.

When emergency personnel arrived, the pick-up truck was on fire, Sones said. Nearby neighbors and Blackford County Sheriff Chief Deputy Jim Heflin used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Investigators are waiting for the toxicology reports of both drivers, which is standard procedure for crashes resulting in serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation and additional information has not been released.
