CONNERSVILLE, Ind. -- The ashes of a woman who died 17 years ago that were recently found inside a car that was about to be crushed have been returned to the woman's family.

Michael Sherwood, who operates a car crusher, said he found the ashes and a death notification for Josiephean Shields inside a car. According to the death notification, she died Jan. 27, 2000 in Greensburg, Indiana.

Sherwood posted the death certificate along with a photo of the ashes on his Facebook page, searching for the woman's family.

"My heart wouldn't let me just let it be trashed," Sherwood said in his post. "I'm sure any decent human being wouldn't have let it be crushed and sent to be recycled like trash,"

Saturday, Sherwood said he took the ashes to Kentucky so they could be returned to the woman's family.
