Central Avenue bridge closes due to construction

INDIANAPOLIS -- Attention Fall Creek commuters: You may need to find a new route to or from work.

The Central Avenue bridge over Fall Creek closed on Friday, causing a backup during rush hour Tuesday morning.

The east side of the bridge suffers from erosion.

Work to begin replacing the bridge began Jan. 18, according to  Betsy Whitmore with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. Initially the construction was set to start in the spring, but due to erosion, work began immediately.

The project is expected to be completed in 2018.

In the meantime, a spokesperson says the light at Fall Creek and Central Avenue is now flashing yellow for both eastbound and westbound traffic.  The DPW is also going to set the center lane on Fall Creek to a red X to let drivers know that the lane is not open to westbound traffic.

If you would rather avoid the area altogether, we have some alternate routes for you to try.

If you're heading northeast on Fall Creek Parkway, turn left on Meridian Street, then go north. If you're heading southwest, take Keystone Avenue to 25th Street. Turn left on 25th Street to go west.

Editor's note: A previous version of this map suggested drivers turn left on 38th Street. Instead, drivers should turn on Keystone Avenue, then head south.
