CONNERSVILLE — A Connersville councilman resigned Saturday after a racist Facebook post was published on his profile.
Mike Bishop said in a resignation letter he too was upset about the post, but claims he did not post it and isn't sure how it was posted.
"However, given the current political climate I understand that remaining in this position of Connersville City Council at Large would remain a distraction to all of the positive changes the Frank Administration has been striving for," Bishop said. "I am sorry that I will not be a part of the good that has already happened knowing the bright future that is ahead for Connersville."
Jeannine Lee Lake, who is running for U.S. Representative as a Democrat, held a rally Saturday afternoon calling for his resignation.
When she first saw the post, she says tears were brought to her eyes.
After people had reached out to her about the post, she said something needed to be done and organized the rally.
"Racism has no part in Indiana, in the country, and really in the world," Lake said.
She estimates about 50 people showed up to the rally.
WRTV reached out to Connersville Mayor Chad Frank over the weekend by email for a statement and is awaiting a response.
