5 shot outside American Legion Post in Evansville

EVANSVILLE — Five people were shot early Sunday morning outside an American Legion Post in Evansville.

Around 3 a.m., Evansville Police Department officers and emergency personnel were in the area of the American Legion Post, on Chestnut Street, on the report of a disturbance, according to a press release from the department.

Officers responded to the legion post after hearing gunshots and quickly arrested the suspected shooter as he was running away, according to the release.

Five people were injured, according to the release. Three people had serious injuries. Two people had minor injuries and did not want any assistance from medical personnel.

Four cars were struck by the gunfire.

A man, 37, allegedly got into an altercation with another person in the parking lot when he pulled out a gun and began shooting, according to the release.

The man was arrested on the suspicion of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, resisting law enforcement and criminal mischief, according to the release.

According to a statement from the American Legion Department of Indiana, the incident started earlier in the evening when two men had an argument inside the post. One of the men was asked to leave, and the statement said he waited outside until the post closed and began shooting at the people when they left the building.
