SOUTHPORT — The death penalty case involving the man accused of killing a Southport police officer has been set for March 2022.

The suspect, 31-year-old Jason Brown, is accused of shooting Southport Lt. Aaron Allan 11 times on July 27, 2017.

Allan was responding to a crash with an overturned vehicle at Madison Avenue and Maynard Drive. When Allan approached the vehicle to help, the driver pointed a gun at him and fired multiple shots, according to the probable cause document filed in 2017.

A witness told police the driver continued shooting as Allan tried to crawl away.

Brown was arrested and later charged with murder.

Last year, police officers and family members escorted Allan’s son to his first day of second grade. Allan was shot and killed hours after walking Aaron Jr. to the bus on his first day of kindergarten in 2017.
