INDIANAPOLIS -- After a 19-year-old was shot and killed on Indianapolis' northeast side, a police spokesperson said the department isn't getting much cooperation from friends and family at the scene.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road.

The man was found on the sidewalk next to an apartment building and a gas station near the intersection, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Harold Turner said. The victim was later identified as Andre Simms, 19.

The shooting scene was difficult to control at times for IMPD -- the department called out extra officers to prevent people from crossing the police tape.

"We're not getting a lot of cooperation, unfortunately, from family and friends at this point in time," Turner said. "We do know that he lives in the area and that he visits this area and this gas station quite a bit. We are hoping some cameras or eventually that someone will come and tell us exactly what happened or why this happened and give us any suspect information."
