Indiana State Police SWAT trooper shot by suspect near Madison

MADISON — An Indiana State Police SWAT trooper was shot Saturday morning by a suspect near Madison.

A suspect allegedly shot the trooper during a standoff on State Road 56, east of Madison, ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said in a tweet.

The trooper, whose name has not been released, was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment, Wheeles said. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

At least one suspect was taken into custody, Wheeles said.

State police said the incident began at approximately 2:30 a.m. when troopers responded to reports of a man firing shots inside a house. When they arrived, officers helped get the other occupants of the house to safety.

A 59-year-old man was still inside the house, and the Indiana State Police South Zone SWAT team was brought to the scene. The man continued firing shots inside the house throughout the early morning hours.

A member of the SWAT team, an 18-year veteran of ISP, was shot in the leg around 8 a.m. when he was positioned outside the house. State police said a second member of the team returned fire, but the man was not hit.

The man soon left the house and was taken into custody. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail. RTV6 does not name suspects until formal charges are announced.
