BLOOMINGTON — DNA evidence collected from a man who was recently arrested on a felony charge has led Bloomington police to charge him with an alleged sexual assault and burglary in 2006.

The 47-year-old man, of Heltonville, was arrested preliminary charged with rape and burglary on Saturday after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in her apartment, Bloomington Police Department Lt. Ryan Pedigo said in a press release.

On the night of March 28, 2006, the man allegedly walked into a woman’s apartment on East 2nd Street, grabbed one of her kitchen knives, and demanded she get out of the shower, Pedigo said. The woman attempted to flee, but was forced into a bedroom where she was sexually assaulted by the man.

The woman’s apartment was unlocked because she was waiting for her boyfriend to come over, Pedigo said. When the woman’s boyfriend arrived, the suspect got past the boyfriend and fled the scene.

The woman was later taken to the hospital where DNA was collected, Pedigo said. On Tuesday, the Indiana State Police Laboratory notified Bloomington police they matched the DNA collected to the suspect, who was arrested on felony charges in late 2018 in Lawrence County.

Detectives also served a search warrant Saturday at the suspects Lawrence County residence, Pedigo said.
