LAWRENCE, Ind. -- A man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in Lawrence, Indiana.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m., at an apartment in the Landings at 56th. When police arrived, they found one man on the sidewalk with at least one shot to the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner identified the victim as Kurt Estes, 43.
Lawrence Police Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff said officers responded to a shots fired call in the same complex a few weeks ago.
"Over the years, there have been some incidents back here, but nothing like this," he said.
There were no immediate witnesses to the shooting.
"Typically, somebody winds up knowing something," Woodruff said.
Neighbor Shawn Conners said he is fed up with the violence in his community.
"I saw that there was a body laying on the ground and I saw that there was a white tarp on it," said Conners. "It's upsetting to see this neighborhood being treated the way that it is and people acting the way that they are."
The apartments are less than a mile away from Lawrence Central High School and Belzer Middle School, but a district spokeswoman said the incident had no connection to the schools.
This is Lawrence's second homicide of the year, Woodruff said.
"That's two too many," he said. "We're not happy about that. It's about average for us. We typically have two to four on average."
Conners said he wants to take action.
"I feel that it has to happen as a grass roots level and I feel that us as private citizens have to be the ones to start that change," he said. "I think that if you have any information don't be shy - come forward."
Police said they do not believe Estes lived in the community.
