INDIANAPOLIS — A carjacking suspect was in critical condition after being shot by police officers on an Interstate 65 on-ramp.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to a car crash at the intersection of 56th Street and Georgetown Road shortly after 4 p.m.
According to IMPD, a passenger in one of the crashed vehicles carjacked an uninvolved third-party vehicle and fled the scene.
Police say they quickly located a vehicle matching the description of the one that had been carjacked and tried to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver led officers on a pursuit that ended on the on-ramp of I-65 Southbound at Kessler Blvd.
According to police, the suspect stopped on the on-ramp and emerged from the car.
Police say the suspect had a gun and pointed it at officers. Two officers then opened fire on the suspect.
The officers were identified as six-year IMPD veteran Officer David Yohe and five-year IMPD veteran Officer Donovan Hankins.
The suspect was struck and officers rendered aid.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He is now in stable condition.
IMPD identified the suspect as 33-year-old Michael Barnes.
According to police, Barnes was placed under arrest for a violation of probation in Grant County. This violation was from a 2018 incident where he was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a narcotic drug, theft and more.
Police say Barnes will be arrested for his alleged role in the carjacking events. The exact charges will be determined after review by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
No officers were injured, and all officer body worn cameras were activated.
