NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- One man was killed in a shooting Tuesday morning in New Castle, Indiana.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. at a house near the intersection of 9th and Vine streets.

New Castle Mayor Greg York said a man was shot in a garage at the house. The shooting suspect then went into the house, York said.

The victim was later identified as Steven Dunn, 49. Dunn was taken to a hospital where he died.

George Wood, a neighbor of the house, said the neighborhood looks after one another, but he's very scared after the shooting.

"I watch after him," he said. "I have a 70-year-old mom who lives here and my wife."

It's been a tough few months for New Castle. This marks the third major shooting in four months for the usually quiet city of about 17,000.

"It's a quiet, low-key, Midwest town," York said. "We're not used to this, but it's still a safe community. We feel like this was very isolated. This was not a random shooting. We feel like it was directed for exactly what happened."

In September 2017, a man was shot and killed by police in New Castle after the man shot an officer during a chase. The officer's protective vest likely saved him from death, police said.

About a month later, another man was shot and killed in New Castle. Officers responded to a house for a disturbance and found a man who had stabbed a woman in the neck with a knife. The suspect died a week after the shooting.
