INDIANAPOLIS — An Arsenal Tech High School student has died after being shot Thursday morning near 38th Street and Post Road.

According to IMPD, officers were called to the intersection of Breen Road and Brentwood Avenue on the city's far east side for a person shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a teen boy who appeared to be shot. The boy was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

The initial 911 call came from a bus driver who saw the body while nearing a stop, according to IMPD. The driver told police he had 22 students on their bus at the time.

Two juveniles were apprehended at the scene unrelated to the shooting, police say. They were eventually released from custody to their parents. It is unclear why they were originally detailed.

Indianapolis Public Schools released the following statement Thursday morning:

"We are aware that an Arsenal Technical High School student was shot before arriving at an IPS bus top this morning and has unfortunately passed away. Crisis counseling services are being made available today for students and staff at the school. Our thoughts are with the student’s family, our staff and students."

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 15-year-old Derrick Houston Jr.
