UPDATE | Shooting that injured teen near elementary school ruled accidental
INDIANAPOLIS — A juvenile was shot Sunday night near William Henry Burkhart Elementary School.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called around 7 p.m. to an area near the elementary school, in 5700 block of South Brill Road, on the report of a person shot, IMPD Officer Michael Hewitt said in an email.
Police found a juvenile critically injured in a wooded area near the school after being shot, IMPD Sgt. Jim Gillespie said at the scene.
The juvenile was awake when they were transported to the hospital, Hewitt said.
Investigators are at the scene and are speaking with witnesses, who are also juveniles, Gillespie said.
Additional details surrounding the incident have not been released.
The identity of the victim or any possible suspects have not been released.
