INDIANAPOLIS -- Police have called off a search for the driver of a stolen van that crashed Monday morning on Indianapolis' southeast side.
A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the owner of a Honda Odyssey van left it running to warm up outside when it was stolen.
Police noticed the stolen van was found near the intersection of Minnesota Street and Southeastern Avenue. Instead of pulling over, the van took off and crashed a short time later.
Of the three people in the van, two were caught. Police called off the search for the driver at 6:30 a.m.
Police frequently advise people to not leave vehicles unlocked to warm them up in the mornings.
Besides the risk of somebody easily stealing it, it doesn't actually do anything to help your car. The idea of letting your vehicle idle to warm up the engine dates back to the 1980s and 1990s, when vehicles were made with carburetors. Today's vehicles are more advanced, and don't need "warmed up" for more than 30 seconds.
If you're warming the car up so you're not cold when you leave, that's different. In that case, you have a couple options so the car isn't unlocked -- a remote starter, so you can be inside the house and start your vehicle, or an extra key, so you can start your car, then lock it, and use the spare to unlock it when it's time to leave.
