INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman was shot and killed early Monday morning on Indianapolis' southwest side.

The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m., in the 1500 block of S. Goodlet Avenue. Responding Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. 

Veronica Hayes, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While police were investigating the shooting, a fire broke out in the attic. The fire department was called to the scene. The fire was ruled accidental -- caused by a blanket getting too close to a lamp.
