FISHERS, Ind. -- The YMCA in Fishers, Indiana was evacuated on Tuesday after a malfunction in the pool area caused a chemical leak.

The Fishers Fire Department was called to the YMCA near the intersection of 126th Street and IN-37 around 11 a.m. because patrons and employees in the pool area were complaining of respiratory burning.

"The safety of our members is our first priority," the YMCA said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Six adults and one child were hospitalized, but their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Eleven other people were checked out at the scene.

Fire crews released building back to the YMCA shortly after 1 p.m. and it reopened to the public at 4 p.m.

The YMCA plans to keep the pool area closed until experts can complete a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction.
