HANCOCK COUNTY – New technology at the Hancock County Dispatch Center plans to take 911 calls to the next level.
The new Smart 911 system, launching in May, will allow those in the county to input information into a protected profile making it easier for dispatchers to locate them during an emergency.
“You can do a basic profile with just your name, home address, email address, and phone number you want associated with your profile,” said John Jokantas of the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center. “You can put medical information in there, your picture, pet’s pictures and pictures of your house.”
Dispatchers said spending just few minutes setting up a profile can save time during emergencies.
“If you have a profile, it follows you,” said Jokantas. “If you call from a cell phone in any other area that has it, your profile will pop up on their system.”
Several other Indiana counties already utilize or plan to launch the system soon.
“The money has already been budgeted into one of the 9-1-1 funds, and that is where it will continue to come out of,” said Jokantas.
