INDIANAPOLIS -- A homeowner was shot Sunday morning during a struggle with a break-in suspect on Indianapolis' southeast side.

Police were called to a house on the 5800 block of Somers Drive in the Arlington Acres neighborhood around 6:30 a.m. Sunday on a report of burglary in progress.

When they arrived, they found a 30-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

The man told police he heard somebody enter his house through the back door, and saw them coming up the steps from the basement. He told his wife to call 911 and to take their three kids to the bedroom and hide.

The man had a shotgun on the suspect, police said. During a struggle, the homeowner was shot in the lower left leg, and the burglar ran out through the back door.

Police set a perimeter with K-9s but they couldn't find a suspect.

The homeowner was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police searched the scene and found fingerprints on items the suspect touched.
