KOKOMO, Ind. – A 15-year-old who died after leading police in Kokomo on a pursuit that ended in a crash has been identified.
The Howard County Coroner says Travis L. Abston Jr. of Battleground was driving when he crashed into another vehicle on Dixon Road near the intersection of Carter Street just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Kokomo Police Department officers say they were notified around 7 a.m. from the Howard County Dispatch about a stolen vehicle in Battleground that may be headed for Kokomo. Police also received information that the driver was armed and dangerous and may be headed to Kokomo to harm another person.
Call 6 Sources say early information shows that the person Abston was targeting was another student who attended The Crossing in Kokomo.
Classes were canceled at The Crossing Tuesday after police informed the school that a threat was being made against another student. Police would not confirm that the two incidents were related but Call 6 sources say that the threats were connected.
The person who made the threat was armed and dangerous, according to Chief School Officer Ryan Hill.
As a precaution, school administrators decided to cancel class Tuesday for all 67 students. Some staff members were already at the school when the decision was made, and police were dispatched to make sure they were okay.
Kokomo police also went to the home of the student that was being threatened to make sure they would stay safe.
The situation is still under investigation by the Kokomo Police Department, and no other details about motive have been released at this time.
