KOKOMO — An 18-year-old man shot by police Monday in Kokomo is in serious condition at an Indianapolis hospital, police said Wednesday.

An officer with the Kokomo Police Department responded to a parking lot behind a Goodwill store in the 2200 block of East Markland Avenue around 6:35 p.m. Monday on a report of possible shots fired.

The officer, a seven-year veteran, found a person standing outside a truck when he arrived, according to Kokomo Police Department Major Brian Seldon.

"The subject displayed a handgun," Seldon said in a news release. "The officer fired shots injuring the subject. The officer immediately called for medics to render aid."

Medics transported the man to a Kokomo hospital before he was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is in serious condition. Seldon said no officers were injured in the incident.

The officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
