KOKOMO, Ind.— Kokomo police are investigating after two people were shot, one fatally, early Sunday morning.
Kokomo Police Department officers were called around 3:30 a.m. to the 400 block of West Monroe Street and found a man who had been shot when they arrived. The victim, Keith Jewell, 50, of Kokomo, later died, according to police.
A short time later, police responded to the 1100 block of North Lindsay Street on the report of another person who had been shot. Police said when they arrived and found Jon Whitehead, 55, of Kokomo, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Whitehead was transported by a medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and is in stable condition.
Police said in a press release that Whitehead was sitting in a car after dropping off a passenger when a suspect opened the door, ordered Whitehead to the ground, and shot him as he exited the car.
Police are looking for the suspect, described as a black man with light complexion, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches tall, 170 pounds, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and possibly a stock hat, according to the press release.
Police are looking for a 2002 Buick LeSaber with Indiana license plate 606BWH that was stolen from the scene.
Police said they do not know yet if the two shootings are related.
An autopsy for Jewell has been scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Monday.
