GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Residents at a Greensburg apartment complex found an unwelcome site this week in the form of hundreds of dead fish washed up on the shore of their lake.
Norm Schlemmer, the owner of Lake Point Apartments, believes the fish kill is the result of pond turnover. Schlemmer says the fish kill began a few days earlier, and has happened before.
The water reportedly isn't toxic, but was emitting a foul odor.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was investigating the fish kill and released the following statement:
“The Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM) emergency response (ER), the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Decatur County Health Department are investigating dead fish in two private retention ponds inside an apartment complex at 2301 N. Broadway St. in Greensburg. IDEM ER has taken water samples as a precautionary measure. IDEM ER has observed the ponds are not aerated and are shallow. The ponds are overstocked with fish for their size, and temperatures have been warm. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.”
