INDIANAPOLIS -- Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man wanted on multiple warrants after a chase early Monday morning.

The chase began when an IMPD officer noticed a suspicious vehicle near the area of 16th Street and Sherman Drive. The officer tried to pull it over after noticing a traffic violation.

There were three people in the car, and the officer received information on all three, but believed the driver had given a fake ID. When the officer went back to get more information, the vehicle sped off.

The chase lasted about six minutes, and ended near the intersection of 36th Street and Sherman Drive when it was hit by another vehicle.

The suspect's vehicle ended up on its side, and police were able to take all three people into custody.

The driver was identified as 28-year-old Martez Smith. Police say he was wanted on warrants for:

  • Dealing cocaine
  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Felony battery
  • Misdemeanor battery
  • Domestic battery
  • Criminal confinement
  • Strangulation

Police also found cocaine and other drugs in the vehicle.

He will also face new charges of dealing cocaine, possession of cocaine and resisting law enforcement.

The other occupants of the suspect's vehicle were released at the scene.
