INDIANAPOLIS — Members of Indiana Task Force 1 have been activated to deploy to aid people on the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Laura approaches.
According to a statement from the Indianapolis Fire Department, 25 members of the task force will be leaving tonight for the Gulf Coast area.
The unit will deploy as an urban search and rescue task force.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the center of Hurricane Laura is currently 480 miles southeast of Lake Charles, La. and 510 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. The storm is a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.
Forecasters with the NHC, however, are expecting the storm to gain strength as it approaches the coast. The hurricane could have winds of 115 mph as it makes landfall either Wednesday night or Thursday morning, the hurricane center said.
